So basically the lore is that for a while the world was at war with the so-called ‘Omnics’ (artificial intelligence), which lead to the founding of the Overwatch by the United Nations. Overwatch basically was the world police, trying to maintain peace and order while in the wake of the war, artificial intelligence started living on the planet like other people out of flesh and blood, and ya’ll know how very well some peeps would take that.

However, not all was as happy-go-lucky as one would hope, and rumors of corruption within the Overwatch started overtaking, and people began to be v suspicious and aggressive towards them, culminating in a supposed accident that destroyed their headquarters and killed the first in command, Jack Morrison (aka Soldier 76), and the second in command, Gabriel Reyes (aka Reaper).

Decades later, world once more is under threat, and they need to pull Overwatch back together with old and new faces.

So that’s basically the groundwork, though really, you have to actively search out the history and stuff because lbr it’s an FPS (first person shooter) and they don’t give too much diddlywank about the history in the game itself xD
